Creating the perfect home gym for a high profile client

A convenient location remains the most important factor in how exercisers choose their gym, so what if you could go one better and literally have your gym on your doorstep? Better still, what if that gym was designed to your exact specification?

We’re specialists in home gym design and create dozens of bespoke workout spaces for private clients each year. Most recently we created an innovative fitness space for a high-profile TV personality in Richmond, South West London.

The brief:

The client had recently moved property and as part of their house renovation, dug a substantial basement under the back of the garden to house an 85sqm family-friendly gym and activity space. With children aged 10 and 13, the brief was to create a space where the whole family could enjoy being active together. Alongside devising a versatile space, interior design was another important factor in the brief. The client requested an aesthetic which seamlessly matched the rest of the property. The ability to tailor everything from flooring trim colour to rig design made EXF an obvious choice for the contract.

The new angular basement required made-to-measure design elements to ensure space was maximised.

The result:

Our team fitted out the space from floor to ceiling, including equipment, flooring and bespoke storage.  In consultation with the client, elements were selected to ensure the overall design complemented the interior décor of the main house.

Key features of the space included a 3.8m bouldering wall and bespoke functional rig. The Rig, which incorporated the original ceiling beams, was designed to match the clients training interests, whilst also being appropriate for younger users, and includes high ropes, rings and a salmon ladder.

Once the building work was complete, it took us just one week to kit out the space, making the client’s vision for a family-fitness facility in his own home a reality.  The family use the space daily and are delighted with the results.

“Maximising space within non-uniform spaces, minimising disruption for the family and accommodating the needs of users of all ages were just some of the challenges we combatted during this project,” says Charles Burch, Managing Director of EXF.  “At EXF we have 25 years of experience and know that proper planning and design is critical to the long-term success of a home gym. This project truly demonstrates that our solution driven attitude and bespoke abilities can fulfil any brief no matter what the constraints.”
